THE TOUGH GUY OF THE MANGROVE FAMILYThe Red Mangrove or Rhizophora Mangle is as hardy as they come. Bring on the salt, the changing humidity, variable air and water temperatures. The dominant member of the Mangrove family, the Red Mangrove is recognized by its large, spider-like prop roots. Amazing fact: the Red Mangrove’s propagule can survive floating in the ocean for up to one year– the reason why it is able to colonize huge territories and successfully compete with other Mangrove species.Red Mangroves are a great choice for shoreline plantings, along bays and canals. They are an important wildlife habitat, and make an effective wave and wind break. They also act to stabilize soil. If you’re thinking of them for your home garden, they will grow up to 20 feet, and conjure up the tropics. They’ll grow best in a mudded area.
